Dental Imaging

Dental Imaging at Coolum Radiology

While many dentists can perform basic X-ray imaging in their clinics, we utilise advanced equipment to diagnose conditions and support your dentist, orthodontist, or dental surgeon in planning effective treatments. We provide specialist dental radiology reports for dental and maxillofacial imaging referrals.

Preparing for your examination

OPG’s and Cephalometry scans do not require an appointment. Please be aware that CT Dentascan, MRI scans require an appointment, please call us to arrange a time.

What to bring

  • A referral from your GP or specialist
  • Medicare card
  • Pension/concession card

In most cases, no advance preparation is required. Eat normally and take medication as usual, unless your doctor or Noosa Radiology staff has given you other instructions.

Please tell us if you are pregnant.

Reasons for Dental Imaging

Your dentist or specialist may send you for dental imaging for several reasons including:

  • Diagnosing disease in the teeth and bone
  • Planning surgery such as removal of wisdom teeth
  • Planning dental treatment such as braces
  • Planning periodontal (gum disease) treatment

What to expect

You will be asked to remove all metal objects including:

  • Jewellery and piercings from around the head area
  • Glasses
  • Dentures
  • Hearing aids

OPG & Cephalometry – In the imaging room you will be asked to stand with your chin resting on a small shelf to provide accurate positioning. For an OPG, you will be asked to bite gently on a covered mouthpiece to steady your head.

CT Dentascan – In the imaging room you will be asked to lie on the CT table on your back. Your head will be placed on a head rest, your mouthpiece, if necessary, will be placed into your mouth prior to the scan. During the examination your head will move in and out of the CT machine several times.

Our equipment utilises the latest radiation reduction techniques and the risks at these exposure levels are thought to be very small and outweighed by the information obtained by performing the scan.

When can you get your results?

The images obtained are digitally recorded. At Coolum Radiology our highly trained and qualified radiologists interpret the images and provide a report for your doctor and/or referring health care provider usually within 24 hours, although depending on the complexity of the scan this may take a little longer.

You will need to make a follow up appointment to discuss the results with your referring practitioner. Your doctor can access your report and images electronically via a secure portal and you will be able to access your images via our patient portal.
